10 foods not to miss at the Ohio State Fair

I was invited to spend the evening at the Ohio State Fair and try some of the new foods. There are more than 40 new foods at the fair this year and I’m excited to share a list of 10 I think you shouldn’t miss which includes both new and old favorites.

10. Velvet Ice Cream

Bowl of Buckeye Classic

It wouldn’t be a trip to the fair without a visit to the butter cow and a big bowl of ice cream from the dairy products building. Alongside this year’s theme celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Velvet Ice Cream introduced the Orange Moon this year a flavor of orange ice with brownie chunks and marshmallow swirls.

9. Pineapple Dole Whip

Craving the infamous Pineapple Dole Whip from Disney? Now you don’t have to shell out the airfare to grab your favorite cool treat, find the Pineapple Dole Whip at Martin’s Fine Foods and it’ll put a smile on your face just like one of my favorite bloggers, Robin of CbusLocalLove.

8. Chocolate Chip Cookies

Eaton Cookies is back with their giant buckets of Chocolate Chips cookies. Pair these with a bottomless glass of milk and spend your entire day munching.

7. Giant Caramel Apples

Some food just scream Ohio State Fair to me and one of those is the giant caramel apples. I prefer mine covered in rainbow sprinkles but Kevin is more of a peanut guy which is fine by me because we can eat get our own. The Ohio State Fair has no shortage of spots to grab one and keep in mind, you’re getting your daily intake of fruit so how bad could it be?

6. Maple Sriracha Bacon Donuts

From everyone’s favorite donut stop – Inky Dinky Donuts. These guys have been slinging donuts for years and a friend of mine once told me that every morning he worked the fair he would stop for their hot, fresh donuts and walk straight to the dairy products building to pair with a fresh glass of milk. The perfect fair breakfast.

5. Pork Butt Tots and Philly Tots

Brought to you by Donut burger, this tater tot base adds Philly steak, onion and green peppers then topped with melted cheese. The pork butt tots complete with pulled pork, onions, and melted cheese. I had a hard time deciding which one I liked more.

4. Caramel Maple Bacon Funnel Cake

Honorable mention Mint Grasshopper Funnel Cake made with mint Oreos, mint sauce and whipped cream which is yummy if you’re a mint lover but the caramel maple bacon has my heart. It’s a top contender for my favorite fair food this year.

3. Flamin’ Hot Cheeto Corn Dog

How do you amp up a typical corn dog? Add flamin’ hot Cheetos to the batter and on top and you have a new favorite snack. Dip in hot sauce and nacho cheese and you have lit up your tastebuds. Check this item out at Tracey Company and if you want to get wild, ask for the secret menu item, the Flamin’ Hot Cheeto Cheese on a Stick.

2. Pork Loin Sandwich

Literally my favorite food at the fair

I was introduced to my very favorite food item last year during a tour of fair. Have you fallen off your chair that my favorite food is NOT something sweet? Yeah, me too! But this pork loin sandwich from Ohio Pork inside the Taste of Ohio cafe is a MUST HAVE. Sweet, juicy, tender – this sandwich melts in your mouth. Trust me on this one – spend the $5 and grab this sandwich.

1. Deep-Fried Everything

Deep-Fried Buckeyes
Deep-Fried PB+J
Deep-Fried Brownies
Deep-Fried Larva

This wouldn’t be a true Ohio State Fair post unless I mentioned all things deep-fried. You can pretty much guarantee that any food on your list is offered in a deep-fried format. Bugs? Yup, we tried em. PB+J? Yup. Gummy burgers, cheesecake, cinnamon rolls, strawberries, Oreos, buckeyes, smores, and the list goes on and on. Do yourself a favor and indulge in one deep-fried item this year and take a chance and try something new.

Want to win tickets to the fair? Head over to sweetlycbus and get entered to win SEVEN passes, a parking pass, and two midway ride bands. Then you get to spend the rest of your money on the food (my favorite part)!

Have a favorite fair food that I didn’t mention? Leave it in the comments so I can add it to my list to try during my next visit.
