A Night of Candle Making with The Candle Lab

The CbusFoodBloggers were invited to spend an evening at The Candle Lab in a gorgeous part of Grandview right on Grandview Ave. The store is such a warm and airy space you want to stay and hang out. Plus being on the same block as Grandview Theater & Drafthouse, Spagio (which now has my all time favorite ice cream – Indulgence Ice Cream – seriously go there and get some ASAP. Like RIGHT NOW), Thread, Peabody Papers, Cub Shrub, and Staufs among many others; it’s a little slice of heaven.

At The Candle Lab, they believe that scent plays a crucial role in our daily experiences – we focus on so many other parts of our life, why not focus on the smells too. Especially the aromas that fill us with memories or make us smile. At The Candle Lab, they want to help you use the magic of custom fragrance to create those feelings for pure enjoyment. I truly believe them when they say you’ll be amazed at how consciously crafting the scents that surround you can enhance your day-to-day life.

The Candle Lab started in 2006 as a small shop in Worthington. Since that day, they have grown to multiple stores in Columbus, Cincinnati, and Pennsylvania. All of the stores offer hand-poured candles in over 120 fragrances ranging from the unique (Awapuhi and Yuzu) to spicy (Peppercorn and Wasabi) to masculine (Mahogany and Straight Razor) to floral (Olive Blossom) and beyond. The Candle Lab strives for scents that are clean, accurate, and strong without being heavy. They use natural soy wax, pure fragrance oils, and cotton paper wicks which creates a long-lasting, clean burning, and true to scent candle. You also have the option to buy one off the shelf, but I prefer to enjoy the full experience by pouring my custom-scented candle (or create a lotion, sugar scrub, or other home and body product.) If you don’t live near a store? All of their fragrances are available for purchase online as a candle, reed diffuser, room spray, fragrance oil, and more.

Pouring your candle is a fun and relaxing activity perfect for a ladies’ night, date night, kid’s birthday party, team-building event, and any other reason to get a group together! If you have a part of 5 or more, you can visit their party page to make a reservation. They can also assist with unique wedding/event favors, corporate gifts, private branded products, community fundraisers, and custom fragrance consultation for branding and special events.

What I love is that you are welcome to bring in your container to pour a candle into. Family heirlooms, special jars, and favorite mugs make your candle unique and meaningful. Containers must be able to hold water and withstand heat – metal, ceramic, and glass are all great. The container must be open-mouthed and not bottle-necked – cups and mugs vs. vases. If you are unsure if your container is appropriate, bring it to the store, and they can assist you. Of course, they have a wide variety of containers right in the store. Been here before and have an empty jar of theirs? Bring it back to the store, and they’ll give you $1 off your purchase – no limit! Don’t worry about the jars being in mint condition – they’ve got the tools to reuse or recycle them properly.

Worried about creating the perfect scent? That’s where their Scent Stylists come in – they can help you narrow down your list to just a few scents that blend perfectly together. You’ll design your label and mix your oils at the Fragrance Bar to create your unique custom scent. They offer a variety of candle jar sizes and styles as well as home and body products, ranging from ~$16-32 (most under $25), inclusive of the entire experience!

This entire process of smelling, selecting your jar and fragrances, designing your label, and creating your custom-scented product takes about 30 minutes. If you want to pour a candle and pick it up that same day, please plan to visit the store no more than approximately two hours before closing as candles take 90 minutes to cool before they are ready to take home. If you don’t mind picking up your candle another day, then you are more than welcome to stop in anytime before close to pour. There is no rush to pick up your finished candle – they hold onto them for a long time!

Unfortunately, they are unable to accommodate outside food & drink, but the Grandview location serves beer, wine, and a couple of signature cocktails that can you can enjoy while pouring candles. Of course, while you’re waiting for your candle to set, take the time to visit one of the stores’ neighbors for a bite to eat or a drink or do a little walking around the neighborhood for some shopping. All of the stores are located in walkable neighborhoods bursting with local charm, just waiting to be explored!

A group is welcome to create scented products other than candles – they have a variety of home and body products such as reed diffusers, room sprays, body lotion, and scrubs, etc. No group is too large or small! They will work with you to ensure your event runs smoothly no matter the size.

Are you ready to start smelling outside of the box?

When your guests arrive at The Candle Lab, they’ll be greeted by one of the friendly Scent Stylists who will walk the group through the process. You’ll start by making a list of your favorite scents you’ll select a jar to pour into, varying in size and style, or use a jar that you’ve pre-selected for your group. Your group will then sit at The Fragrance Bar, where the Scent Stylists will guide each person through selecting two or three scents that will blend perfectly together to create their unique custom-scented blend. You’ll design your label, combine your skin-safe fragrance oils, and pour your candle.

We made so many fun scents!

Pricing is dependent on the type of jar your pour into. If you are paying for your group, you are welcome to pre-select a jar or jars to keep within your budget. For example, the standard 8 oz jar is just $17, inclusive of the entire experience. Also, if you choose to pay as a group you can take advantage of our buy three, get one free deal – a 25% savings!

While waiting for our candles to set, we walked up the block to Grandview Café. It is no secret that Grandview Cafe has been a walkable getaway for residents since 1925. From the restaurant’s inception during the prohibition to the jazzy days of the 50s and 60s, the changing fare from Greek to comfort, the vibe has been unique to the times, but the message of a community has remained consistent.

We love how the restaurant highlights the history that lives on in the display of vintage artifacts from the wood washed floors, the sturdy leather suitcases lining the bar, the wallpaper exposing years of change, and the ceiling beautifully lit by a chandelier over a century old.

Wings: 1lb of lightly breaded wings – choose from naked, buffalo, white BBQ (shown here and the absolute BEST) or spicy mustard. Served with celery and blue cheese or ranch.

Skillet Mac & Cheese: elbow macaroni, béchamel sauce, parmesan, white cheddar, gruyere, fontina, served broiled in a cast iron skillet.

Trivia Night is every Wednesday 7-9pm regular play. 9-10pm is Trivia After Dark.
